MAGNUM MARTÍNEZ PREPARADO PARA EL QUIKSILVER PRO PUERTO ESCONDIDO

Magnum Martínez estará compitiendo en el Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido, primer evento WQS de categoría tres estrellas organizado por Quiksilver en territorio mexicano, y que se estará disputando del 12 al 18 de agosto en las olas de Puerto Escondido. El evento repartirá $50.000 en premios y contará con la presencia de Clay Marzo (Hawaii), Peter Mel (USA) y Tyler Newton (Hawaii).

Antes de tomar su vuelo hacia México, Surfpress habló con Magnum sobre el Quik Pro Puerto Escondido y otros temas.

“Primero que todo, estoy muy contento de que este evento se pueda llevar a cabo. Para los surfistas latinos es otro paso muy importante, no solamente que se haga una vez, si no que se vuelva un evento clásico por años a seguir.

Obviamente, los latinos han tenido muy buena actuación en los últimos WQS que se han hecho en América Latina. Este, es el propósito principal de este evento, darle auge, enfoque y protagonismo a los surfistas latinos en tierras latinas, para que puedan subir su nivel, y al mismo tiempo demostrar a los países latinos, el excelente nivel y potencial que existe en el área”.

¿Además de competir que otras actividades tendrás durante el contest?

Tal vez sean dos, tres, no se aun exactamente, pero lo que si estoy seguro es que estaré bien ocupado, sea como comentarista para la web en vivo, o para los espectadores en la playa, o tal vez ayudando a la gente de ESPN a conducir un programa sobre la competencia.

Se termina el mundial de la ISA y hubiese sido muy grato haberte visto competir ¿Por qué Magnum Martínez no pudo defender los colores de Venezuela?

Muy buen mundial, por cierto. Me gustó mucho la actuación de los países latinos, me parece que hubo un cambio importante durante este mundial, y ya se sintió y notó más aun la manera como han elevado su nivel de surf en países como: Perú, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, y obviamente Costa Rica. Al punto tal, que por primera vez desde que tengo uso de razón, gran parte de estas naciones terminaron en mejor posición que Brasil, New Zeland y Tahití entre otras.

Personalmente, tengo ya más de un mes fuera del agua, esta fue la razón principal por la cual no asistí a "chequearme" en Costa Rica con el equipo venezolano, al cual le agradezco por tener el detalle de al menos, invitarme al chequeo que produjo al equipo que compitió en CR.

Naturalmente, es mi intención y voluntad representar a Venezuela como lo he hecho durante toda mi carrera en competencias como ésta, pero este punto, ya será una cuestión que la Federación Venezolana de surf tendrá que decidir, para futuras competencias, refiriéndome a la inclusión de atletas como Justin Mujica, mi persona y otros que vivan fuera del país y quieran formar parte del equipo.

¿Cómo ves la llegada de Quik a un lugar tan fuerte y grande como México?

México, en mi parecer, es un gigante que apenas despierta. Una nación con tanto potencial de olas y talento, que me da la impresión de que sólo es cuestión de tiempo antes de que se convierta en un país líder en la industria del surfing a nivel latino y mundial.

Obviamente, tiene ante sí, todos los retos que los países latinos encuentran al momento de desarrollarse en cualquier área. En mi parecer, si México se une y se enfoca en el crecimiento del surf, tendrá muchas satisfacciones y logros en el futuro corto.

Quiksilver, busca un lugar importante en este mercado, pero ciertamente está al tanto de las necesidades de esta nación y lo importante que es darle el apoyo a la industria nacional, creando oportunidades con eventos de la talla de este WQS 3 estrellas. Esto es sólo es el comienzo de una importante y longeva relación.

MAGNETOTHERAPY

After two weeks of tour around Australian lands, the Venezuelan surfer Magnum “Magneto” Martínez is back in Carlsbad (California) to recharge batteries. Manly Beach, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Avalon and some other Sidney’s northern beaches were some of the points chosen by the member of the Quiksilver team. He also went to Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast where he visited Noosa Heads. We will see the trip at Gravedad Zero (ESPN) in a few days, and the show will also include Tom Carroll and Layne Beachley who were interviewed by Gravedad Zero

Relaxed at his home, Magneto talked to Surfpress about the days in Australia, the The Lab Project and some other issues that are part of the Magnetotherapy.

“We shared some sessions with Tom Carroll at his home town Avalon and we surfed in the beach where he grew up surfing, which is called North Avalon. I also went to Dee Why with Tobby Martin, a respected local surfer and an former WCT competitor . We had the chance to visit Gold Coast with Troy Brooks and we surfed several spots such as Currumbin, Duranbah and Surfers Paradise among others. We also went to Layne (Beachley)’s home where we interviewed her.


Which was your highest moment of this first part of the year?

There are many. Seeing the place where I will be building my home, God willing! When I got back from Australia I could readjust some things in my life and in my surfing and that has helped me to feel free and relaxed in the last weeks… And the wedding of my great friend Otto (Flores) was also a nice experience to me.

What competitions have you planned to participate in on this second part of the year?

This year I’ve changed my focus a bit, I’ m not participating in as many competitions, but I’ve planned to go to: the US Open, the ISA World Championship in Costa Rica if the Venezuelan team wants me to, the QUIKSILVER WQS at Puerto Escondido in August, the WQS at Newport Beach, maybe the Cold Water Classic at Santa Cruz (California) and it could be possible that I also go to some ALAS like in Venezuela and in Costa Rica.

The last two great WQS events that were organized in Latin American countries (Mexico and Chile) were won by Latin surfers. Why do you think there are no more events in places like Costa Rica, Panama or El Salvador which have great conditions for the Latin surfers to stand out?


Costa Rica and Panama have been the venue of WQS and ASP events in previous years, where a lot of international surfers have competed, not only Latin surfers. These events were very productive for Latin America, but the price of a WQS’s sanction is pretty high and many companies prefer to avoid these costs and to have events without this sanction. The difference is that a WQS event helps you to get points to gain, maintain or improve your position on the ASP ranking. And if the event takes place in Latin America that will obviously benefit Latin surfers and will give them more and better international acknowledgement. This also helps the industry and the local talent to get involve in such important events.

What’s the The Lab Project?

The LAB is a Project some friends of mine and I have been working in the last year and a half. We are a very talented group in many areas, with a great potential of marketing and promotion of different products related to surfing. This will help many Latin American countries to develop a surfing industry and to encourage the local talent through the availability of high quality products at a lower cost.

And above all, we offer technical and informative advising for the benefit of our clients and of the audience in general. We are a company formed by Latin American people, represented by Latin American people and made for Latin American people with the best world wide quality.

More importantly, is our commitment to the environment and the fact that we need to pay a lot closer attention to it before is too late to make the changes in our life style and the products we create and consume, hence, The Lab will be look to stimulate individuals and regions in creating the consciousness necessary to improve our environment and to live in harmony with Mother Nature.

How was the spring time at California?

We had some south and south-west swells that didn’t stop breaking for at least two weeks. I have had the chance to practice for hours in the last weeks at Lowers Trestles one of the best breaks of the area. I have surfed with pros like Chris Ward, Damien Hobgood and Rusty Long among others and a lot of top juniors of the country. Lowers is the place in the summer, where most action and talent come together in the whole coast of the USA.

Have you been testing new boards? Have you tested new models after the revolution Kelly Slater is promoting with those really innovative measures?

I haven't really changed my dimensions at all. Kelly is Kelly, he's got a unique ability and he's looking for ways to challenge himself and keep it interesting, riding new designs, blending guns with short boards into one design that also gives him the possibility to get on some parts of the wave where regular longer boards wouldn't be as efficient or too long to maneuver. He can also ride just about anything and rip on it!

So, working with my shaper Marcio from Sharp Eye, we've been tweaking a bit the rocker and rail edges on my boards, just enough to allow the same design or model surfboard to work in many different situations and types of waves.

The last batch of boards that I've got are feeling very positive in many ways, they're fast, responsive yet they drive and hold the rail in tight critical situations. Also experimenting with some epoxy materials from this company named Keahana, has giving me some good feedback on board flex and the many different ways you can improve a board with just a subtle change of materials...


Which are the three big trips that you have planned for the rest of the year?

I’m planning to go to Mexico, Bali and to other place that I cannot mention for now…Sorry (laughs)

Why do you think there were so few registered people in the WQS at El Gringo?

El Gringo is a very dangerous wave, there is a lot of people that are afraid of it. I could tell there will be more people next year from what I could see in the last WQS, including me. And there is also the fact that Chile is far away from places like USA, Australia, etc, and there are always going to be less registered surfers if the event is not at least of 4 stars rating. God willing the event will have 4 stars next year and the attendance will double.

Después de una gira de poco más de dos semanas por tierras australianas, el venezolano Magnum “Magneto” Martínez se encuentra nuevamente en Carlsbad (California) recargando energías. Manly Beach, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Avalon y otras playas del norte de Sidney fueron las elegidas por el integrante del team Quiksilver, además de Gold Coast y Sunshine Coast donde pudo visitar Noosa Heads. El trip se podrá ver en la pantalla de Gravedad Zero (ESPN) en los próximos días, y tendrá entrevistas de Magnum a Tom Carroll y Layne Beachley.

Desde la comodidad de su hogar, Magneto habló con Surfpress y comentó los días australianos, el proyecto The Lab y otros temas que forman parte de la Magnetoterapia.

“Compartimos unas sesiones con Tom Carroll en su home town de Avalon y surfeamos en la playa donde creció surfeando llamada North Avalon. En Dee Why surfié con Tobby Martin quien es un local muy respetado ahí y ex WCT. En el Gold Coast tuvimos la oportunidad de andar con Troy Brooks y surfear varios lugares como Currumbin, Duranbah y Surfers Paradise, entre otros. Estuvimos en casa de Layne (Beachley) compartiendo con ella y entrevistándola un poco también.

¿Cuál fue el momento más alto de este primer semestre del año?

Han habido varios, el ver la tierra en la que estaré construyendo mi casa DIOS mediante, y recientemente al llegar de Australia y reajustar ciertas cosas en mi vida y en mi surfing lo cual me ha liberado mucho y me ha ayudado a sentirme muy bien en estos últimos días. El casamiento de mi gran amigo Otto (Flores) fue una experiencia muy agradable también.

¿Cuáles son las competencias que tienes previstas para la segunda mitad del año?

Este año mi enfoque ha variado un poco, no haré muchas competencias, pero en las que he planeado estar son: el US Open, el mundial de ISA en Costa Rica si el equipo de Venezuela me lo permite, el WQS de QUIKSILVER en Puerto Escondido en agosto, WQS en Newport Beach, tal vez el Cold Water Classic en Santa Cruz (California) y tal vez un par de ALAS más como en Venezuela y en Costa Rica.

De los últimos dos grandes eventos QS realizados en territorio latino (México y Chile) fueron ganados por surfistas latinos. ¿Por qué crees que no vuelven a realizar eventos en lugares como Costa Rica, Panamá, El Salvador que tienen olas de condiciones óptimas para que los latinos se luzcan?

Costa Rica y Panamá han sido sedes de eventos WQS de la ASP en años anteriores, habiendo muy buena asistencia internacional, no solamente Latina. Estos eventos fueron hasta cierto punto muy productivos para América Latina, el costo de la sanción para un evento WQS es alto, y muchas compañías prefieren evitar ese gasto y hacer eventos sin esta sanción. La diferencia es que un WQS te da puntos que te ayudan a obtener, mantener o mejorar tu posición en el ranking del ASP y siendo estos eventos en el área de América Latina, obviamente beneficia a los surfistas del área y los impulsa a obtener más y mejor reconocimiento a nivel internacional. Esto también ayuda a la industria y talento local de presenciar e involucrarse en eventos de gran magnitud.

¿En qué consiste el proyecto The Lab?

The LAB es un proyecto en el que varios amigos míos hemos venido trabajando bastante en el último año y medio. Somos un grupo con mucho talento en diversas áreas, con un gran potencial de mercadeo y de difusión de distintos productos relacionados con el surf el cual ayudarán a muchos países de la América Latina a desarrollarse en la industria del surf, al empuje del talento local por medio de la disponibilidad de productos de alta y excelente calidad a costos accesibles.

Más importante aun, será el respaldo técnico informativo que ofreceremos para el beneficio e instrucción de nuestros clientes y el público en general. Somos una compañía conformada por Latinos, representada por Latinos, hecha para Latinos con la mejor calidad disponible a nivel mundial.

¿Cómo estuvo la primavera en California?

Tuvimos una serie de oleajes de sur y suroeste que no han parado de romper. Siendo Lowers Trestles una de las mejores playas de esta zona, he tenido la dicha de curarme en sesiones de horas en las últimas semanas. Surfeando al lado de pros como Chris Ward, Damien Hobgood, Rusty Long entre otros y una cantidad extremada de los top juniors de la nación, Lowers siempre es el lugar que más acción tiene en el verano en la costa Oeste de Estados Unidos.

¿Has estado innovando con las tablas? ¿Testeaste nuevos modelos después de la revolución que plantea Kelly Slater con medidas realmente innovadoras?

No he cambiado mis medidas para nada, Kelly es Kelly, él necesita el reto de correr tablas distintas lo cual lo motiva y al mismo tiempo le da la oportunidad de encontrar cosas positivas en distintos diseños. Me gusta la idea de las tablas más pequeñas para olas grandes y tubeadas, la combinación de poco longitud con el grosor y el bloque del tail o cola de la tabla como si fuera el de una grande, lo que te da el drive y la tracción necesaria para mantener la tabla en el agua penetrando y acelerando con la maniobrabilidad de una tabla mucho más corta, lo cual te ayuda a completar tubos que de otra manera no podrías, al menos no tan profundamente.
Lo que si estoy haciendo con mi shaper Marcio Zouvi de Sharp Eye es tonificar muy cuidadosamente la distribución del volumen en toda la tabla, los rieles y filos son muy importantes y el outline que a mí me favorece siempre parece ser el mismo, así que las ultimas tablas que tengo se sienten muy positivas en muchos aspectos

¿Qué tres grandes viajes tenés planeados de ahora a fin de año?

Un par a México, Bali y uno que no puedo mencionar por ahora… Sorry (risas)

¿Por qué crees que hubo tan pocos inscriptos en el QS del Gringo?

El Gringo es una ola peligrosa, mucha gente le teme o no quieren saber nada de ella. Por lo que vi en este último WQS, me da la impresión habrá más gente el año que viene, incluyéndome. También Chile es un destino lejos de lugares como USA, Australia, etc y si el evento no es de al menos 4 estrellas, la cantidad de inscriptos será más o menos baja. DIOS mediante sea un 4 estrellas el año entrante y la asistencia al menos se duplique.
